E. Independence Boulevard Now Open after Pedestrian Hit, Killed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - East Independence Boulevard near Sardis Road North was shut down for hours Thursday morning after officials said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m and the road reopened around 10 a.m.

The closure caused major issues for drivers during rush hour.

The vehicle involved was a maroon SUV and the driver remained on the scene until officers arrived.

Officers haven't said where on Independence Boulevard the pedestrian was hit, but they are using surveillance video from the car dealership across the street to see if it shows the crash.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
