There will be a scholarship basketball game, 3-point contest, and 2 3rd and 4th grade exhibition basketball games to be held at the CSD Gymnasium. The final basketball game will consist of the Police VS All-stars. (all stars are senior’s basketball players chosen from 2 of our area high schools.)
The purpose of this game is to build better relationships with our youth and our community. Also giving high school and middle school students the opportunity to work together with the police to create a successful event. Our Official Logo for the event is designed by a high school student, shirts, posters, flyers, programs and promoting will all be done by high school students.
This game would be a great opportunity to keep the legacy of our fallen officer Mark Swaney alive.
: Officer Mark Swaney was shot and killed on Christmas day after he and another officer responded to a man with gun call. Upon arriving at the scene, about two miles from Davidson College, the officers were informed that the suspect had left the scene.
Another unit arrived at the scene, allowing Officer Swaney and his sergeant to look for the suspect. They located the suspect and began to question him as a group of people gathered around them. One of the bystanders grabbed Officer Swaney's arm as the suspect pulled out a gun and shot both officers. The suspect was shot by return gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Swaney was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately one hour after the incident.
Officer Swaney had served with the agency for 2 years and had previously served with another agency for 5 years.
All proceeds from this event will be placed into the Mark Swaney Scholarship fund and given to 1 senior from the 3 participating high schools.
To win the Scholarship, the high school student will have to write an essay, topic chosen by my Police Chief. Police Chief and School admin would read all essays and choose the best one.
