Firefighters respond to apparent explosion that destroyed Ballantyne home

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Charlotte Fire Department said a rescue is underway after what appeared to be an explosion at a large home in Ballantyne Tuesday afternoon.

It happened just before 2 p.m. along James Jack Lane off Ballantyne Commons Parkway.

This is near the intersection of Ballantyne Commons Parkway & Lancaster Hwy....Media staging is off of Ballantyne Commons Parkway but otherwise avoid the area of Ballantyne Commons Pkwy between Lancaster Hwy & Johnston Rd. 

A neighbor told Channel 9 she felt her entire house shake at the time of the incident. 

Officials said they treated at least two people from nearby homes for injuries, but they are expected to be OK. Officials said several homes in the area were damaged and have been checked by firefighters. 

It's unclear how many people were inside the home at the time of the explosion or how seriously they were hurt. Officials are working to determine how many patients they have.

Firefighters said an active rescue is underway for the residents who were inside. 

Officials said they announced a fourth alarm on the fire to call in more manpower, with more than 80 firefighters responding to the scene. No firefighters were hurt.
