CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Mayor Vi Lyles announced Monday that Better.com is now calling Charlotte home.
The digital mortgage lender said it plans to hire 1,000 people over the next five years, with 100 employees hired by the end of 2019.
The company said it has opened an office at WeWork's coworking space in South End.
Earlier this year, Ally Financial announced a partnership with Better.com, which the company said was the driving force behind its opening offices in Charlotte.
"Opening a new office in Charlotte will help us tap into the city's incredibly talented workforce," said Vishal Garg, CEO and founder of Better.com. "As a rapidly growing startup, we see an entrepreneurial hunger and spirit in the city of Charlotte that is akin to what we used to see in places like downtown Manhattan in the 1980s and Silicon Valley in the 1990s. We're thrilled to have chosen Charlotte as we enter the next stage of our company's growth."
Better.com is just one of several companies, including Lowe's, Honeywell, BB&T and SunTrust, expanding in Charlotte.
