Simone Biles Breaks Gymnastics Record After Winning 21st Medal At Worlds

49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships - Day Five

Simone Biles just smashed yet another gymnastics record this week.

On Tuesday (October 8), the United States women’s team took home their 21st medal at the Worlds Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, a moment which also marked a significant milestone for Biles career. With her 21st trophy, the 22 year old broke her tie with Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina for the most medals won overall by a woman at the world championships.

The accomplishment is the latest in a string of historical performances for Biles this month. The beam dismount she delivered back in August has officially been coined as “The Biles” earlier this month, and the triple-double stunt she pulled off during her floor routine at the time will be named “The Biles II” after she landed the move during the qualifying round at Worlds.

“Every year it feels better and better just because we’re adding to the legacy,” Biles said of her record-breaking feat. “I feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.” Now, the star is just two trophies away from matching Vitaly Scherbo’s record 23 trophies, the most won for both men and women.

Biles’ achievements come a month after she broke her silence on her brother Tevin Biles-Thomastriple-homicide arrest. "My heart aches for everyone involved, especially for the victims and their families," Simone wrote via Twitter days after Tevin’s arrest. "There is nothing that I can say that will heal anyone’s pain, but I do want to express my sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy."
