A popular discount retailer that recently announced it was shuttering locations around the country will see at least one of its North Carolina locations reopen in the near future.
Nine Big Lots locations across six states will reopen next month as part of a "first wave" of "soft openings" after Variety Wholesalers took control of hundreds of the retailer's stores after Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, per Fast Company. Three additional waves will be announced between April and June.
According to Variety Wholesalers vice president of sales and marketing Jeff King, the nine locations will have their soft openings on Thursday, April 10, after weeks of remodeling and bringing in new merchandise. Among the first wave of stores reopening to customers is one location in North Carolina:
- 1432 E Dixie Drive (Asheboro)
Big Lots CEO Bruce Thorn previously explained the company's "difficult" decision to close hundreds of its stores around the country while still expressing hope that closures could be reversed through a company sale.
"We all have worked extremely hard and have taken every step to complete a going concern sale," he said. "While we remain hopeful that we can close an alternative going concern transaction, in order to protect the value of the Big Lots estate, we have made the difficult decision to begin the GOP process."
